Port-Royal was the usual capital of Acadie from 1636 to 1710, when the British took the town and renamed it Annapolis Royal. They kept it as the administrative centre for Nova Scotia until 1749. For both the French and the British, Port-Royal/Annapolis Royal was the centre of government. It was home to the governor and his council.

The Mi'Kmaq conducted their business with the administrations at this site, the capital of the French and British Colonies.

The various forts constructed on this site were attacked more than a dozen times.
